Hey guys, been trying to get my Sumpod working for many many months now and after a lot of troubleshooting I manage to get it printing but the success didn't last long and soon after, the heat resister lead broke just after 2 print. I had it printing ok at 5mm/s with a lot of supervision so I really would like to find a replacement that is reliable so I can work on other things while it print. Airtripper mention he is currently using a modded Mendel so wondering if everyone is using the same?

Hey Sypher, i still use the original nozzle arichitecture, but made some minor improvements. Changed the nozzle to a Brass nozzle- in my case that helped a lot. It seems to heats up much better than the original aluminium one. Even though i rebuilt Airtrippers Extruder- this is an improvement i should have done earlier i think. No slipping Filament anymore, even if i have fast feed rates Yeay! I am also very interested in the new J-head hotend Airtripper gives a try right now. So let's have some patience...

Not sure if we got the same batch or if it will be worth the trouble seeing how PLA swell before entering the chamber but do you happen to remember which one you got? I may just try it out while we wait for a review for the new J-Head. How fast can you manage it to print at?

I'm just finishing up on a Marlin firmware guide so hopefully will start printing with this new hot end in the next day or two. To be honest, I wished I ordered from hotends.com now. I'll see if I still feel the same after I've had a good look at it and completed testing. Attachments:

sypher: My Hotend is the first batch i think...as i just mentioned, we had to do some small changes to get it work. My Filament does swell too, but we can work with it so far. A good friend of mine is an instrument mechanic, so from time to time we rebuild several things a little altered (f.e. changed the aluminium Nozzle to one made of brass, or just rebuild the cooling chamber with a little bigger measures and put thermal grease between it and the fan) to understand which changes will affect which part. airtripper: Why do you regret to not have bought at hotends.com? Where did you buy it from? ebay? The RepRep shop from Netherlands? Btw, the J-Head looks good to me

I got the hot end from ebay from a guy in Denmark, I guess from the design point of view, the spec is not as good as the ones from hotends.com. However, the spec is much better than the offering from china which I advise not to consider. The one I've got uses PTFE tubing instead of machined PTFE rod. Basically, to get 1.75mm, you have to push in a thin tube inside the tube used for 3mm filament. The 1.75mm filament tube goes all the way down to the nozzle tip and there is nothing to hold it in from the top. If I'd have waited a couple of more weeks I might of got this one instead, which is much closer to the ideal spec. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261155683442?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649Anyway, I've made some progress on the bracket to fit mine to the Sumpod Y axis, should have the bracket printed off tomorrow. Really nice bracket design! I am very curious about your progress with it. I just saw there are soooo many J-Head hotends out there. What would the ideal hotend spec be like for you?
Do you have the aluminium or brass hotend version?
Cheers

I guess the ideal j-head would be the one from hotends.com, mine comes as the aluminium version. Here's my progress report, I've just got the hot wiring to do now before testing. I've decided to use my own thermistor since I don't know the type they sent me. Attachments:

I've discovered that the J-Head I got was not the 0.4mm nozzle I ordered, I measured 0.5mm. So I've wrote a message to the supplier with my claims to see what they are going to do about it. Until It's sorted, it looks like I'll not be using this nozzle any time soon. Attachments:

It is unfortunate that you won't be using your design and putting J-head V through its paces but have to deal with the supplier instead so good luck with it. I think I'll just take a gamble on one myself through eBay.

Does anyone with an aluminum or another machine have any comments on how the nozzles are working. Was the nozzle issue a 1st generation problem or is it still ongoing? Anybody in the know?

This involves converting from a bowden drive to a regular extruder correct?

Well to get it printing after installing the new hotend I just needed a Makerbot MK7 to replace the old one to get those print but it seem like I need to replace that whole extruder soon as well because the screw keep on loosing up or tightening up during a print from all the vibration and motor movement. Airtripper and Makerbot will be a better alternative but I am trying to relocate the extruder closer to the hotend while I am at it and make some space at the back to hold the reel of filament. I'am in the first batch of Sumpod in case your wondering.
